A1181 Original MacBook:
Apple relased the original MacBook in 2006 and discontinued it in 2009. They came in White and Black. The model number on the bottom of the machine is A1181. If you have an original MacBook with a cracked LCD, the service below is for you.
A1342 White Unibody MacBook:
In 2009 and 2010 Apple produced a white unibody MacBook with the model number of A1342 on the bottom. While the earlier versions of the MacBook had a user replaceable battery, this model has a solid rubbery bottom that does not allow you to replace the battery without disassembling the computer.
In 2008 and early 2009 Apple produced a Silver MacBook that has the model number A1278 on the bottom. They created it with a battery cover so you can pull a lever and remove the battery from the laptop. If you have an A1278 MacBook you will need to figure out if you have a broken glass panel, a broken LCD panel, or both!
Glass: If it look like your computer has a cracked windshield (the image isn’t distorted, but there is a crack over the top), you have a damaged glass panel that needs replacement. Another way to verify that your glass is bad is to turn the computer off. If you can still easily see the cracks in the screen with the computer off you have cracked glass.
LCD: If the image is distorted (lines, splotches of black, etc), but the damage is not visible when you turn the computer off, you have a damaged LCD panel.
Both: If the image is distorted, and the glass is cracked, you need a Glass + LCD replacement.
12″ MacBook Retina Model Number A1534
If you have a 12” Retina MacBook, it will have this model number: A1534. You can find the model number on the bottom of the computer in the text that starts with “Designed by Apple in California…”
